Rapid Transformation Under Pressure
When Miles stepped into the role of CEO at Concurrent Technologies – a tech solutions provider to the world’s leading OEMs – he was hit with a startling reality: the company was stuck in the past and needed a top to bottom overhaul. With a legacy structure that hadn’t changed since 1985, it was clear that the business wasn’t equipped to meet the fast-paced demands of today’s tech world. “On day one, our lead salesperson said, ‘I’ve got nothing to sell,’ and in that moment, I knew I had no choice but to dramatically dismantle the business and rebuild it from the ground up.”
Balancing Control with Innovation
For Miles, creativity is a superpower. When considering his leadership of Concurrent Technologies through this period of change, he cites the importance of balancing management control with creative freedom. “There’s a spectrum between command-and-control management and anarchy,” he explains. “The challenge is finding the ‘edge of chaos,’ where the most innovation happens.” Miles believes that while it’s important to have structure and oversight, particularly in a tech business that deals with complex, cutting-edge products, too much control can stifle innovation.
The Power of Culture in Business Growth
Miles knew right from the start that building a strong company culture was essential for Concurrent Technologies to thrive. “We defined a target culture and set up a way to measure our progress,” he says. With his leadership team, Miles rolled out a strategy focused on creating a culture that was not only adaptable and innovative but also aligned with the company’s long-term vision. “If you don’t put in the effort to shape your culture—actively working on it rather than just discussing it—you’re setting yourself up for unpredictable results.”
